Scott Daniel Boras, Ph.D.

Artist, Writer, Curriculum Developer and Instructor

ABOUT ME

I'm lucky to have a job that I love, designing and implementing career development curriculum for a non-profit organization in the Twin Cities. Our work helps individuals overcome racial and socio-economic barriers through career development, personal empowerment, and emotional intelligence trainings.

In my free time, I create art, traditionally abstract oil paintings, and more recently, analog collages. I've always been passionate about collecting vintage and unique print media, including magazines, comics, and other ephemera. In March 2023, I began experimenting with analog collages, and I've been hooked ever since. It's been an exciting journey that I look forward to continuing.

Since analog collage is a new medium for me, my collection is still growing, so there aren't many pieces for sale yet. However, this will change over time. Feel free to contact me about the availability of specific pieces or to discuss commissioning a custom work.

Inspiration and Influences

The biggest influences on my artistic endeavors have always been my parents. I grew up in a household immersed in art, with art supplies readily available to pick up and try. We frequently visited museums, and I was continually encouraged to experiment and explore my creativity.

My inspiration often comes from sources outside the traditional realms of collage and the fine arts. My sense of juxtaposition, surrealism, and overall aesthetic is heavily influenced by the works of author Richard Brautigan. If his poems could corporeally materialize, I like to think they might resemble some of my collages. Regarding paintings, I've always been partial to Hans Hofmann. I also appreciate that he was a teacher ... "In nature, light creates the color. In the picture, color creates the light."

Professional Experience

June 2022 - Present

Twin Cities Rise, based in North Minneapolis, is a non-profit organization now in its 31st year. At TCR, we aim to transform the lives of individuals affected by racial or socio-economic barriers through personal empowerment, career training, and meaningful employment. As the Curriculum Developer, I oversee the content and lessons for career development trainings, learning plans, program and learning assessments, and our e-learning system. In March 2024, philanthropist MacKenzie Scott donated $3 million to TCR following a year of 'quiet research' conducted by her organization into our methods, outcomes, and successes.

August 2012 - May 2022

For 10 years, I taught Communication Studies in the Minnesota State College and University system. My tenure included positions at Winona State University, Minneapolis College, and Dakota County Technical College.

August 2003 - May 2012

I attended graduate school at Miami University, earning an M.A. in Speech Communication in 2006, and later obtained my Ph.D. from the Hugh Downs School of Human Communication at Arizona State University in 2012. During my time as a graduate student, I taught courses in Communication Studies and coached speech and debate.
